About Centaur Fencing
Centaur Fencing (or Centaur HTP) is one of the most well-known brands of horse fencing in the US market. Created over 30 years ago specifically as a safer horse fencing option, Centaur Fence products are safer for horses than barbed wires, steel wire, wood fencing, and even no-climb fencing.
History of Centaur Fencing

In 1980, Centaur founder Ed Robbins witnessed a friend's horse in a terrible accident with wood rail fence. Mr Robbins was devastated to hear that the horse had to be put down shortly after. Knowing that there had to be a better way to fence in his horses, Mr. Robbins set out to use his experience in the polymer industry to create a fence material that would flex like wire fencing but prevent abrasions and slicing that typically occurs with bare wire. The resulting Centaur products are polymer coated high-tensile steel wires that maintain break strengths up to 4,200 lbs (per rail!) while keeping your horse safe in a variety of ways.
Types of Centaur Fence Available
Centaur products come in essentially 4 different varieties:
- High Tensile Polymer (HTP) Rails. HTP rails like the Centaur HTP and Cenflex products are not conductive. If you plan on an electric fence you'll need to plan on either A. using an electric line across the top (white lightning works or something like Electrobraid by Zareba) or using a signle electric rail for your top placement.
- Electric HTP Rails. Though they do cost a bit more upfront, the security and low lifetime cost of an electric fence cannot be beat. Electrically conductive polymer running along the length of the HTP rail will prevent cribbing, leaning, and decrease overall maintenance costs over time.
- HTP Lines. Five or six HTP lines can look beautiful across your pasture, but its not just aesthetics here. Centaur's Polyplus product packs in 1,440 lbs of break strength on each line! that means your horses won't break through your fence line, and if they try the high tensile cable won't cut them as it tends to with bare wires.
- Electric HTP Lines. To round of the breadth of Centaur products, White Lightning provides the same break strength as the Polyplus line with the added bonus of being electrically conductive. Again, electric fencing is far cheaper in the long run and tends to be safer than most alternatives.
